Below are just as few of the changes that are new to the RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II. However, not everything has changed. You still get the best technical support in the industry, with over 35 years of experience working with distance measuring instruments. You still get an unmatched 5-year instrument warranty, and easy plug in compatibility.
The new RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II DMIs are 33% smaller than the older RAC-100/200 models. This makes these units easier to mount in the vehicle, and gives you more room for other equipment.
Duel Window Display
Where the older RAC-100/200 had only one display window, the new RAC units have dual displays, which provide more information in an easier to understand format. The two 6-digit high-intensity LED display windows (exclusive to the RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II) allow flexibility in displaying data to you. The upper, larger display window is primarily used to display distance. It is also used to indicate menu locations and time. The lower, smaller display window is used to display count status, speed, interval distance, menu descriptions, event codes, etc.
Menu Driven Commands
One of the advantages of the new dual display in the RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II is the ability to show more information on the screen. Using this capability has made the unit easier to operate by providing menu driven commands.
The Menu key allows you to select from a variety of functions. After pressing the Menu button, the Add and Sub keys can be used to scroll through the options, which are displayed in the secondary display. To select an option, press the ENT (Enter) key.
Adjustable Brightness Control
All RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II units have a new key function, DIM, which allows you to adjust the brightness level of the display. With this new feature, you can easily adjust the unit's display for various light conditions. The Dim key allows you to select from four (4) levels of display brightness to best suit the ambient light conditions. Full bright is best for daylight conditions while full dim may best suit night conditions. Each time the Dim key is pressed, the brightness will drop one level until the lowest level is reached. It will then jump back to the high brightness level. Both displays, as well as the LED indicators, are controlled by the Dim key.
Store Multiple Calibrations
With the RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II, you can now store up to four separate calibration numbers in memory. This allows for easy transfer of the unit from one vehicle to another. The RAC Geo II also provides a 4 decimal place calibration for even greater accuracy. It is very common to share one RAC, on a plug-in basis, between a number of different vehicles that have been equipped to accept the instrument. Installing additional vehicle kits on other vehicles is an inexpensive and cost effective means to greatly expand your measuring capabilities. Obviously, each vehicle so equipped would have to be calibrated and the number recorded.
The RAC Plus I and RAC Geo II has the unique ability to store in memory four (4) different vehicle numbers and their associated calibration numbers. If you are moving the RAC from vehicle to vehicle you will need to enter the correct vehicle (unit) number prior to measuring with that vehicle.
When you turn on the RAC Plus I or RAC Geo II, the active calibration number will be displayed in the primary display while the vehicle number is displayed in secondary display. With a few simple steps you can change the calibration to any of the four stored in memory.
With the RAC Geo II you can use the unit's internal GPS receiver to do distance measuring without the need for any external sensor. With this receiver you can not only record accurate distances, but also record GPS coordinates of roadway features – making it the most powerful and flexible DMI on the market. There are several methods that can be used to retrieve distance and GPS information from the RAC Geo II.
In its most basic configuration, you can simply stop at each point of interest and write down the distance, latitude and longitude from the instrument’s digital display. The initial display will show the last 6 digits of the latitude and longitude values. If you press the Enter key, the first three digits of these values is then displayed. The reason the last six digits are shown before the first three digits is that, in most cases, the first three digits of your coordinates will not change during the course of a survey. By showing the last six on the initial screen, you can drive from location to location and write down values without having to press a key on the RAC.
In addition to showing the GPS coordinates on the display, the RAC Geo II can also be used to store the data in internal memory for download to the RACPro software. This provides a quick and efficient method of getting GPS data at multiple locations without having to stop the vehicle.
Larger Memory Size
The older RAC-200 contained 1000 memory locations for storing survey events, which could be assigned codes of up to two digits. The new RAC Geo II unit expands the memory locations to 400,000 and the event code size to four digits.
The RAC Geo II has the unique and exclusive capability to store events in internal memory. In addition, you are able to manually key in numeric codes to identify various events, such as intersections, signs, culverts, bridges, pavement markings, telephone/power poles, pedestals, etc. The numeric code can be up to four (4) digits in length, so you are able to identify up to 10,000 separate events for inventory purposes. This feature makes the RAC Geo II ideal for road inventories, outside plant inventories, asset management and engineering.
Note: This feature is exclusive to the RAC Geo II. It is not available in the RAC Plus I.
