Hardware Support - RoadRAMP RURAL Installation
Installing RoadRAMP RURAL Axle Sensors
RoadRAMP RURAL™ axle sensors are recommended for use on Rural
Roads, Dirt Roads, Gravel Roads and similar un-paved, off-highway
sites. Select a site for installing the RURAL axle sensors where vehicles
are maintaining a regular speed – avoiding corners, junctions, hills or
inclines.

Install the sensors across a flat section of road, where both shoulders
are firm enough to hold spikes throughout the project – avoid ruts,
potholes and large rocks.

Once a suitable site to install the RURAL sensors and the TRAX
recorder are identified, identify the output end of the RURAL sensor by
colored marker and install this end of the sensor closest to the TRAX.

Sweep loose gravel etc. from the area around and under the sensor,
then lay the sensor across the road. Pass a 12 inch spike through the
wire loop on one end of the sensor and drive the spike into a firm
section of the shoulder of the roadway. Use washers to hold the wire
loop on the spike.

Pass the second spike through the second wire loop then stretch the
sensor taut across the road and drive the spike into the shoulder to
secure the unit. The installed sensor should now be taut and laying flat
on the road surface, so it will not “bounce”, “flutter” or “snake” when hit
by vehicles.

Chain the TRAX recorder to a tree, pole, etc. then attach a suitable
length of road tube (¼” i.d x 9/16” o.d) to the barbed tube fitting on the
output end of the rural sensor. Attach the other end of the road tube to
the input of the TRAX.

Set-up the TRAX and start the count. Select the layout for the count in
the same manner as if you were using standard road tubes. The layouts
most commonly used are L1, L3 and L4 for volume data or L5 and L6 for
speed/class data.

Once the count has started, check that the sensors and instrument are
counting and/or classifying correctly. Inspect the site regularly to confirm
that the installation is continuing to perform satisfactorily.
